What is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization, explained

More searches now end in an AI-written answer instead of a list of links. AEO is about being the source that answer is built from. Here’s what that actually means.

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization: the practice of structuring content so AI tools — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews, Claude — can read it, understand it, and cite it directly in the answer they give someone, instead of that person clicking through a list of search results at all.

It’s a newer term than SEO, and the two overlap heavily, but they’re answering different questions: SEO asks “how do we rank in search results?” AEO asks “how do we become the answer, when there are no results to click through?”

Why AEO exists now

Search behavior is shifting. A growing share of people ask an AI assistant a question directly instead of typing a query into Google and scanning ten blue links. When that happens, the AI doesn’t show a ranked list — it synthesizes a direct answer, usually pulled from a small number of sources it judged trustworthy and easy to extract information from. If your content isn’t structured for that, you can rank perfectly well on Google and still be invisible in the answer someone actually sees.

How AEO differs from traditional SEO

SEOAEO
Goal: rank high in a list of linksGoal: be the source an AI answer is built from
Success = a clickSuccess = a citation, often with no click at all
Rewards broad topical authority over timeRewards clear, structured, directly-quotable answers
Ranking signals: backlinks, relevance, technical healthExtraction signals: structured data, clear Q&A format, unambiguous facts

In practice, good AEO builds on good SEO rather than replacing it — a technically healthy, well-structured site is the starting point for both.

What actually helps content get cited by AI tools

Structured data (schema.org markup)

Machine-readable markup — Organization, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList, Article and similar schema types — tells an AI system exactly what a page is about and how its content is organized, without it having to guess from loosely formatted prose.

Direct, quotable answers

Content written as clear question-and-answer pairs, with the answer stated plainly near the top, is far easier for an AI system to lift and quote than a paragraph that builds up to its point. This doesn’t mean writing badly for humans — it means not burying the actual answer.

Clean, crawlable structure

One clear heading per page, a logical heading hierarchy, and plain text links rather than navigation that depends on JavaScript a crawler might not execute. An AI system that can’t parse your page’s structure can’t cite it accurately.

Specific, unambiguous facts

Vague claims are hard to cite confidently. Specific, clearly stated facts, numbers and definitions are easier for an AI system to extract and attribute correctly.

A simple way to self-check a page for AEO

  1. Does the page answer one clear question, stated plainly, near the top?
  2. Is there structured data (schema markup) describing what the page is?
  3. Could someone skim just the headings and understand the page’s structure?
  4. Are the facts on the page specific enough to quote directly, without needing more context?

Does AEO replace SEO?

No — and treat anyone claiming it does with suspicion. Traditional search results aren’t disappearing, and most of the technical and content fundamentals behind good SEO (site speed, clear structure, genuine expertise) are exactly what AEO needs too. AEO is best understood as an additional layer on top of solid SEO, not a replacement for it.

Do you need to choose between SEO and AEO?

No, and trying to would be the wrong framing. They share most of the same foundation — a fast, well-structured, genuinely useful site — and diverge mainly in how content gets formatted for extraction versus browsing. A sensible approach treats AEO as a set of additions to a solid SEO practice: keep doing the fundamentals well, and layer in structured data and directly-quotable answers on top, rather than picking one discipline and ignoring the other.

The proof is this website

We don’t have third-party case studies for AEO yet — it’s a new enough discipline that few do. What we can point to is this site itself: every page carries structured data (Organization, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and more), FAQ sections written as direct question-and-answer pairs, and a clean heading structure — built using exactly the approach described above.

Which AI tools does this actually apply to?

Each has its own specifics, but they share the same underlying requirement: content has to be structured clearly enough to extract and trust, not just technically present on a page somewhere.

Measuring AEO: harder than measuring SEO, for now

Traditional SEO has mature tools for tracking rankings and traffic. AEO measurement is still catching up — there’s no universal “AEO Console” yet. In practice, that means watching for things like: direct traffic or brand-name searches increasing (a sign people saw your name in an AI answer and looked you up), monitoring whether AI tools cite your site when you ask them questions in your own topic area, and keeping an eye on referral traffic specifically arriving from AI tools where analytics can detect it. It’s less precise than SEO tracking today, but that gap is closing as the tools mature.

We build AEO into the same engagement as SEO: structured data across every page, content written to be directly quotable, and a site structure that’s as easy for an AI crawler to parse as it is for a human to read.
